Get Hyped

Lately, everywhere I turn I keep hearing this air horn sound effect. I know that it has origins in the dance clubs, but now it’s turning up in movies, TV shows, commercials and even as a sound effect that some people create using their mouth.

You may know it as a Hype Horn, DJ Horn, Hip-Hop Horn, Reggae Horn, Disco Horn, or simply just an Air Horn.

So, my question… when did this become a “thing” and who is responsible? Does it have origins from Studio 54 back in the 1970’s or is a recent annoyance? Help!!! This has to stop!

Kevin Mason's Holiday Playlist

Holidays On The Hi-Fi Playlist

After a lengthy career in radio, I honestly have a love/hate relationship with Christmas music. I played a LOT of it over the years, and in all honesty most of the songs I played lacked something. For a long time, I couldn’t figure out what that something was. I tried to blame it on the fact that I played ‘Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” waaaaaaay too many times, but that wasn’t it at all.

Then back in 2003 or 2004 when I was involved in running the legendary WAKR radio in Akron (the station where Alan Freed actually coined the term Rock N’ Roll) and there I finally realized what the problem was. The music I loved during the holidays was truly the good ole songs. Today they’re called Christmas standards, but back when I was growing up Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, and Perry Como were everywhere during the holiday season. In the mid 2000’s WAKR was catering to an older audience and playing those standards during the holidays and memories came flooding back.

Last year in my spare time I sat down during the holidays and attempted to create the ultimate Christmas playlist. I wanted to create a list of songs that you could play during a holiday party and even during Christmas Dinner. So this year my gift to you is a playlist I call Holidays On The Hi-Fi. And thanks to Bop.fm you can enjoy these songs no matter where you listen to music online. Happy Holidays!

Ahoy Polloi
Harry Doyle

Hello, Harry Doyle!

Spring is finally here, and that means the baseball season is upon us. When I was much younger I played a lot of baseball and have the physical scars to show for it. I’m also a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs (third generation) so I have the emotional scars to go along with those physical ones.

But in all honesty, I don’t follow the game as closely as I used to. I still have a lot of friends who live and die by the box scores, but for me, it’s simply a quick glance at the online headlines every day.

Official Major League Movie PosterBut…. there is still one thing when it comes to the game of baseball that will stop me in my tracks. If I’m clicking through the TV channels and come upon the movie Major League, I stop what I’m doing and watch. Some of that has to do with the 10+ years I spent in Northeast Ohio. I nearly lived that movie!

Major League is one of those movies where I can quote most of the lines. But the line that makes me laugh out loud every time I hear it, is delivered by the Tribe’s play-by-play man Harry Doyle.

Doyle is played by legendary broadcaster (in addition to many other things) Bob Uecker, and while you might have noticed this line in the movie, anyone who has ever worked in broadcasting truly relates to the extra ‘broadcasting school’ dig that he delivers…just click PLAY below to hear this legendary commentary.

I think it’s time to break out the Cracker Jack!

Hullabaloo

Hullabaloo on NBCLast night I stumbled upon my local PBS TV station during one of their pledge drives, and they were airing a retrospective of the old Hullabaloo TV show that aired on NBC back in 1965 and 1966. It’s probably best know as the show that was replaced by Batman!

I was pretty young back in those days and I don’t really remember the show, but it was great to walk down memory lane and witness some classic music performances.

The only problem with the show…. I can’t get the damn theme song out of my head!  Just Click on the BIG orange play button and see if YOU can!
